Bronfenbrenner’s ecological theory (or bioecological systems theory) encompasses 5 ecological levels that affect an individual’s development (i.e., the microsystem, mesosystem, exosystem, macrosystem, and chronosystem). These different levels can affect an individual simultaneously and bidirectionally. For example, individuals can be affected by the microsystem and macrosystem at the same time, and individuals can also influence the multiple levels surrounding them.
